Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga has not ruled out the possibility of recommending completely shutting down the IDAC after hearing damaging testimony against the unit.
The future of the Investigative Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) hangs in balance after Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga signalled the commission could recommend the unit’s complete disbandment following a string of damaging revelations.
Madlanga's remarks came on Thursday after IDAC's head of investigations and operations, Matthews Sesoko, admitted that the agency repeatedly failed to follow its own binding operational rules.
This added to weeks of evidence exposing alleged misconduct, poor governance and internal turmoil.
The commission has spent the past month hearing testimony from investigators, prosecutors and former IDAC head Advocate Andrea Johnson, who detailed claims of unlawful investigations, ignored procedures, questionable arrests and prosecutions.
