A family of four in Greece must spend about €450 a month to eat healthy, according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization.

The cost of a healthy diet in Greece reached €3.77 per person per day in 2024, up 38% since 2019.

Unhealthy eating is estimated to cost Greece €18.5 billion a year. Globally, the average cost of a healthy diet rose to $4.46 per person per day in 2024, while 2.6 billion people could not afford one. In low-income countries, that number grew from 464 million in 2019 to 545 million in 2024.

About 673 million people – 8% of the world’s population – faced hunger in 2024, with projections showing 512 million chronically undernourished by 2030, nearly 60% of them in Africa.

Hidden costs of the global food system total $12 trillion a year, with 70% tied to unhealthy diets.
