President Cyril Ramaphosa has urged South Africans to use the upcoming Nelson Mandela International Day on Saturday, 18 July, to refocus national efforts on tackling deep-seated poverty, hunger, and social exclusion.
Writing in his weekly newsletter to the nation, President Ramaphosa noted that the day is a global call to action designed to harness Madiba’s legacy to confront universal challenges. The 2026 international theme is, "It’s still in our hands to combat poverty and inequity." The President challenged citizens to view their volunteer work not as an isolated, one-off event, but as part of a larger, systemic mission to drive sustained community action.
Responding to this call, non-profit organisations across Durban are mobilizing to turn this legacy into tangible relief. Leading the charge, the Association for the Aged (Tafta) has launched its Sisonke – We Are Together campaign, appealing to communities to support vulnerable older persons across its 13 residential, care, and community facilities.
