Mandela Day tree-planting initiative at Verulam Hospice - Members of Verulam Hospice and the Sathya Sai Centre Durban North plant indigenous trees during a Mandela Day initiative that will provide lasting shade, beauty and hope for patients, families and visitors.
Across the globe, people dedicated 67 minutes of their time on Mandela Day to make a difference. One minute for every year Nelson Mandela spent fighting for human rights and social justice. Across Durban on 18 July, community groups, businesses, and volunteers answered Madiba's call to service, proving that small acts of kindness can spark long-term transformation.
The spirit of selflessness echoed in every corner of the city. In Bonela and Chatsworth, volunteers from Sewa International South Africa empowered high school pupils while hosting health screenings for seniors. Across various shelters and care homes, the DSK Group distributed nearly 700 blankets, hygiene packs, and hot meals. Meanwhile, at the Chatsworth Centre, the Rotary Club of Chatsworth partnered with SANBS to collect 87 pints of life-saving blood, comfortably beating their initial target.
Among these remarkable outreach efforts a project at Verulam Hospice focused on creating a deeply rooted, long-term legacy.
