Mandela Day is a reminder that small acts of kindness can create lasting change.
While South Africa has made democratic progress over the past three decades, challenges, including corruption, inequality, violence, and intolerance, continue to stain the legacy of Nelson Mandela.
These were the sentiments expressed by the Nelson Mandela Foundation, the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation and the Active Citizens Movement ahead of Nelson Mandela International Day on Saturday.
They also emphasised that Mandela Day should inspire year-round civic engagement rather than one-off acts of service.
On its website www.gov.za government called on citizens to dedicate their time and effort to combating poverty and inequality under this year's theme: "It's still in our hands to combat poverty and inequity."
