PM says 10-coach hydrogen train developed under Make in India marks beginning of next phase of railway technologyPrime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday launched India’s first hydrogen-powered train, saying the new train marks a significant step in the modernisation of Indian Railways.Addressing a public gathering at Jind, Prime Minister Modi said Haryana and Jind have permanently etched their names in the pages of history with the launch of the country’s first hydrogen train.“Today, Jind and Haryana have permanently etched their names in the pages of history. From here today, the nation has been gifted its first Hydrogen Train,” the Prime Minister said.Besides, Prime Minister Modi said the hydrogen-powered train is completely emission-free and stands as a successful example of the Make in India initiative. The Prime Minister said that Indian Railways has taken a major step in adopting 21st-century technology.Highlighting the transformation of Indian Railways, Prime Minister Modi said the country has electrified nearly 99 per cent of its broad gauge railway network, compared with around 30 per cent before 2014, helping reduce dependence on imported diesel. On technical basis, hydrogen fuel cell trainset generates its own electricity onboard using hydrogen, producing near-zero emissions at the point of use. Unlike conventional electric trains that draw power from overhead lines, the train generates electricity through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, with water vapour as the only direct by-product.Meanwhile, the train will initially operate on the Jind-Sonipat section of Northern Railway. Configured as a 10-coach passenger train, it has a capacity of around 2,600 passengers, significantly higher than most hydrogen passenger trains currently operating globally, which generally comprise two to four coaches and are deployed on short regional routes.Furthermore, the train consists of two Hydrogen Driving Power Cars and eight trailer coaches. Each driving power car houses hydrogen fuel cells, lithium iron phosphate batteries and hydrogen storage cylinders that together generate traction power for the train. The train has an operational speed of 75 kmph on the Jind-Sonipat section and a design speed of 110 kmph.Supporting the project is a dedicated hydrogen production, storage, compression and dispensing facility established at Jind, creating India’s first integrated hydrogen railway ecosystem. Before commissioning, the system underwent an independent third-party safety assessment by TÜV SÜD, Germany. The train has been equipped with multi-layer safety systems capable of detecting hydrogen leaks, heat, flames and smoke.Besides launching the hydrogen train, Prime Minister Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for railway, highway, healthcare and cultural projects across Haryana.Published on July 17, 2026
