Hundreds of refugee families have been camping outside the Moore Road Home Affairs since May.
The Siyafana Sonke Action Campaign has stepped up its efforts, urging the South African government to act swiftly in addressing what it describes as a deepening humanitarian crisis impacting both documented refugees and migrants in the country.
The campaign, which advocates for the rights and welfare of these vulnerable communities, warns that refugees are becoming pawns in a political game while pressing humanitarian concerns remain largely ignored.
At a press briefing on Thursday, campaign members and refugee representatives said more than 400 refugees – including dozens of children – have been living on the pavement outside the Department of Home Affairs office on Che Guevara Road since mid-May 2026 after fleeing intimidation and violence.
The organisation said the refugees are not requesting permanent housing but emergency shelter, while a safe reintegration process was developed.
