Humanitarian crisis: Documented refugees left without shelter in Durban.

The National Campaign Against Xenophobia, backed by more than 130 organisations including trade unions, civic formations and civil society groups, has raised concern over a group of documented refugees who have been left sleeping outside the Department of Home Affairs on Che Guevara Road in Durban for more than four weeks.

They were allegedly displaced by violence and left without access to safe accommodation.

The campaign said the situation reflected a wider humanitarian and governance failure, as displaced families were forced to survive on pavements with no adequate shelter, sanitation or protection.

"These refugees, from various countries, were displaced after being chased out of their homes and communities in different parts of Durban by vigilante groups... This is unacceptable," said the group.
