Children are among the 450 refugees living outside the Home Affairs Refugees Reception Centre on Che Guevara Road.
For two months, approximately 450 refugees have been sheltering on the pavements outside the Home Affairs Refugees Reception Centre on Durban’s Che Guevara (Moore) Road.
This has been described as a severe humanitarian crisis, as families have been forced from their homes. While these individuals hold legal refugee status, they find themselves caught in a cycle of displacement and vulnerability.
On Thursday, the Siyafana Sonke Action Campaign briefed the media on the refugees living outside the centre.
Yeshelen Govender of Siyafana Sonke Action Campaign said the group of refugees on Che Guevara united in mid-May, which saw a sharp escalation in violent action in Durban.
