Suliman Carrim, a North West businessman, has come under fire after he was allegedly spotted having lunch at a Cape shopping centre after he had requested to be excused from the Madlanga Commission due to ill health.

The Madlanga Commission is heading into a potentially dramatic 2pm session after claims emerged that businessman Suliman Carrim was allegedly seen at a Western Cape shopping centre on the same day he was scheduled to testify but did not appear due to reported health concerns.

The commission is expected to hear submissions from Carrim’s legal team on Friday as it considers the circumstances surrounding the businessman’s failure to appear before the inquiry.

Evidence leader Adv Matthew Chaskalson told commissioners that two whistleblowers had independently reported seeing Carrim at a shopping centre, where they allegedly saw him inside Woolworths before later having lunch.

The commission is awaiting possible CCTV footage from the shopping centre and Woolworths to establish whether the claims can be verified.
