Questions have been raised about North West Businessman Suleiman Carrim's health condition when it emerged that he was allegedly spotted having lunch at a restaurant and shopping at a Western Cape mall, despite telling the Madlanga Commission he was ill.

Questions over North West businessman Suliman Carrim's absence from the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry intensified on Wednesday after evidence emerged suggesting he may have been out in public despite submitting a medical note declaring himself unfit to appear.

Carrim, who had been subpoenaed to testify before the commission, failed to attend proceedings. However, his absence quickly became the focus of discussion after evidence leader Advocate Matthew Chaskalson SC revealed that the commission had received whistle-blower reports alleging Carrim was seen having lunch with an entourage and shopping at a Western Cape shopping centre on Tuesday — the same day his medical certificate was submitted.

According to Chaskalson, independent inquiries conducted by the commission had since confirmed aspects of the reports through eyewitness accounts.

"The two reports corroborated the same details," he told the commission.
