North West businessman Suliman Carrim was allegedly seen having lunch at a restaurant with an entourage and shopping at a Western Cape shopping centre on Tuesday, despite telling the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry he was unwell and submitting a doctor’s note that same day.
This transpired during commission proceedings on Wednesday, when Carrim was expected to appear after being subpoenaed to do so. He did not show up.
Evidence leader Advocate Matthew Chaskalson SC said Carrim’s sick note appeared to explain his inability to appear today, but it did not explain his failure to answer the Regulation 10.6 notices served on him.
He said the commission is still waiting for Carrim to disclose the identities of his companies' auditors: something the doctor’s note suggests he has been unable to do for two months.
