A 51-year-old man has received an effective prison sentence from the District Court in Lovech after being found guilty of possessing a large amount of counterfeit currency with a total value exceeding 200,000 euros.
The investigation into the case began in February this year after police received operational information about the suspect. The man, identified by the initials V.G., was stopped for a roadside inspection near a village in the Lovech region.
During a personal search and subsequent searches of properties used by him, authorities discovered a significant quantity of counterfeit euro banknotes. The fake currency had a total nominal value of more than 205,000 euros.
After reviewing the evidence, the court found the defendant guilty and imposed a two-year prison sentence. The punishment will be served under an initial general regime.
The court took into account that there were more mitigating circumstances in the case and also deducted the period during which the man had already been held in custody as part of the pre-trial proceedings.
