Senior investigator at the Investigative Directorate Against Corruption's (IDAC) Brian Padayachee failed to explain why they arrested Crime Intelligence head, Dumisani Khumalo and co-accused.

Madlanga Commission has questioned the Investigative Directorate Against Corruption's (IDAC) probe into Crime Intelligence head, Dumisani Khumalo after investigator Brian Padayachee failed to explain what triggered the probe and how it was initiated.

The commission also heard that arrests linked to the investigation went ahead despite a SAPS Legal Services opinion that the available evidence was too weak to support criminal charges.

Padayachee on Wednesday came under intense scrutiny as commissioners challenged the basis of the investigation into Khumalo's vetting and security clearance, as well as the inclusion of several other senior SAPS officers.

He told the commission that the information prompting the investigation had been relayed to him by other officials, but admitted he could not account for the original referral that set the process in motion.
