Virudhunagar District Collector N. O. Sukhaputra, has appealed to farmers to insure kharif season crops and horticultural crops immediately.In a statement, Mr. Sukhaputra said that Prime Minister’s Crop Insurance Scheme has been implemented in Tamil Nadu since 2016. The scheme would be implemented through SBI General Insurance Company in Virudhunagar district during 2026-27.The crop insurance premium for maize is ₹466 per acre. It is ₹192 per acre for green gram, ₹370 per acre for black gram and ₹409 for cotton.The premium for insuring groundnut is ₹431 per acre. For horticultural crop like onion the premium is ₹1,591 an acre and ₹3,997 an acre for plantain.The deadline for payment of premium for groundnut under kharif crop is August 31. The last date of payment of premium for black gram, sorgum and cotton is September 16 and for maize it is September 30.Premium should be paid for onion by August 31 and for banana by September 15.While registering their crops, the farmers should produce along with the insurance proposal, registration form, adangal/sown certificate, copy for front page of bank passbook and Aadhaar card.Upon payment of the premium at the common service centres, Primary Agricultural Cooperative Societies and banks, the farmers should get the receipts, the statement said.Farmers should insure their crops without fail considering the crop loss that would be caused by natural calamities and pest attack, the Collector said.
