City of Joburg Mayor, Dada Morero remains defiant despite a court interdict preventing him from eradicating illegal structures at Marble Towers.
Despite the Gauteng High Court, Johannesburg, stepping in to once again temporarily stop the City of Joburg and Mayor Dada Morero from demolishing or interfering with structures at Marble Towers in the CBD, an undeterred Morero continued his cleanup operation on Thursday morning. The order follows an urgent application by the building's owner, Goldenrod Group, after city officials began demolishing illegal structures around the property on Wednesday.
This back-and-forth legal tussle between the city and property owners comes just over a month after the city confirmed that the demolition of illegal structures at Marble Towers in the CBD had been halted following an urgent court interdict obtained by the building’s owners.
On Wednesday, Judge Stuart Wilson ruled that the city may not carry out demolitions, restrict access, or make use of law enforcement agencies at the site until an urgent hearing is concluded. At the centre of the city's dispute against the owners of the Marble Towers property are claims that illegal trading continued despite an earlier court order requiring the owner to secure the building.
