Joburg Mayor Dada Morero has reassured Parliament of his determination to restore the finances of the city.
Outgoing Mayor Dada Morero, who this week appeared before the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Public Accounts (Scopa) and the Portfolio Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs on Tuesday, has reinforced his administration’s commitment to restoring the city’s financial health.
This declaration comes amid alarming revelations that the City has written off R45.16 billion in unauthorised, irregular, fruitless and wasteful (UIFW) expenditure over the past five years, a figure that underlines a disturbing trend in mismanaged public funds.
During the parliamentary session, Morero was questioned rigorously about the city's dire fiscal situation, which included persistent billing issues, procurement challenges, and a particularly contentious R10bn Political Facilitation Agreement. These challenges have prompted calls for urgent reforms in the administration to enhance accountability and deliver services efficiently to the city's residents.
In response to the overwhelming financial hurdles, Morero's spokesperson, Khathutshelo Mulaudzi, highlighted his administration's focus on implementing a rigorous turnaround strategy. Mulaudzi affirmed that they are committed to accountability and transparency in engaging with Scopa’s oversight role, reaffirming that the administration is not dismissing the scale of the difficulties ahead.
