A Johannesburg Metropolitan Police officer holds the newborn baby girl found abandoned in a plastic bag in Doornfontein.
The cries of a newborn baby, dumped in an open field in Johannesburg, led to her rescue on Monday night.
Members of the public alerted Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officers to the sound of a baby crying near the intersection of Saratoga Avenue and Hadfield Street at about 11.43pm.
The officers were conducting routine patrols in the area when two residents flagged them down and reported hearing cries coming from a nearby field.
The officers immediately searched the open veld and located the infant.
