A newborn baby girl was rescued after being found abandoned inside a plastic bag in an open veld in Doornfontein, Johannesburg, late on Monday night.
The infant was discovered after members of the public alerted Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officers to the sound of a baby crying near the intersection of Saratoga Avenue and Hadfield Street at about 11.43pm.
According to the JMPD, officers from the Rea Vaya Unit were conducting routine patrols in the area when two residents flagged them down and reported hearing cries coming from a nearby field.
