The eThekwini Municipality has deployed a technical team to oversee the construction work underway at the Nazareth Baptist Church premises in eBuhleni Village, Inanda.
After a retaining wall collapsed earlier this week injuring eight people, eThekwini mayor Cyril Xaba has deployed a technical team to provide oversight and support for all construction projects undertaken at the Nazareth Baptist Church premises in eBuhleni Village in Inanda.
The retaining wall collapsed on Monday afternoon, trapping some congregants under the rubble. A swift rescue operation resulted in all of the injured being rescued.
The eThekwini Municipality said Xaba visited the church on Wednesday night accompanied by deputy mayor, Zandile Myeni, councillors, and the municipality's senior management, to introduce the multidisciplinary team, which will work closely with church leadership to strengthen compliance with building and safety standards.
The City said the technical team will provide support on construction, engineering, building inspections, emergency services, and other technical matters to ensure that all projects comply with applicable safety and building regulations. It said the Shembe church had welcomed the deployment of the team.
