Following a tragic wall collapse at the Nazareth Baptist Church in Inanda, Minister Dean Macpherson pledges to enhance building safety regulations and support the affected community.
Twelve construction workers were injured, eight of them seriously enough to require hospitalisation, after a wall under construction collapsed at the Nazareth Baptist Church complex in Inanda, Durban, on Monday afternoon.
Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Dean Macpherson, who visited the site on Tuesday, said it was "only by the grace of God" that no lives were lost in the incident.
During his visit to the church property belonging to the Shembe Christian movement, where workers narrowly escaped death, Macpherson vowed to strengthen building safety regulations and their implementation to help prevent similar incidents in future.
With the cause of the collapse yet to be determined, the minister called for a full investigation and said he was also awaiting confirmation from the eThekwini Municipality on whether the necessary building plans had been approved.
