Senior IDAC investigator Brian Padayachee testified that the 2024 appointment of civilian Dineo Mokwele to the rank of brigadier in the Crime Intelligence Unit was an attempt to "capture" the unit.

Senior investigator at the Independent Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC), Brian Padayachee, told the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry on Wednesday that the 2024 appointment of a civilian, Dineo Mokwele, to the rank of brigadier in the Crime Intelligence Unit was an attempt to "capture" the unit.

He claimed the panel assembled by Crime Intelligence head Lieutenant-General Dumisani Khumalo manipulated the process to appoint Mokwele.

He said his investigation found that Mokwele lied about her qualifications and misrepresented herself and that the panel was aware of it.

In his previous testimony, General Khumalo defended the appointment, stating that Mokwele was the most suitably qualified candidate by virtue of her mechatronics background, which was appropriate for the unit’s covert operations.
