The regional chairman of the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) in Burgas, Hristo Shirokov, was detained in connection with a police investigation, Nova TV reported, citing its sources. The detention took place on Wednesday morning, with unofficial information indicating that the action was carried out in Pomorie.
Shirokov was taken to the Interior Ministry Directorate in Kardzhali, where pre-trial proceedings are underway. He was later released after spending up to 24 hours in custody under the Interior Ministry Act. Authorities have not disclosed further details about the investigation, while criminal police in Kardzhali continue working on the case.
Shirokov is a municipal councilor from the DPS in Pomorie and was elected regional leader of the party in Burgas at the end of 2024. So far, the DPS has not issued an official comment on his detention.
His name has previously appeared in connection with Dimitar Zhelyazkov, known as "Mityo Ochite", a well-known figure from the Nessebar underworld. In the past, Shirokov worked as one of Zhelyazkov’s security guards and was known by the nickname "Shirokata".
In 2004, Shirokov, Zhelyazkov and another of Zhelyazkov’s guards, Gocho Karagochev, were detained during a police operation at the Vranata border checkpoint. Authorities found three gas pistols in a vehicle with altered license plates, which prosecutors said had been modified to fire pellets. The three men were later released on bail, while Shirokov and Karagochev received suspended sentences.
