Coimbatore Consumer Cause has urged Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay to ensure strict implementation of government directions and High Court orders prohibiting an increase in road height during road re-laying works.In a representation, K. Kathirmathiyon, secretary of the organisation, alleged that roads across Tamil Nadu, including in Coimbatore, continued to be re-laid without proper milling, resulting in higher road levels despite government directions to maintain the original Finished Road Level (FRL).He referred to a public interest litigation (W.P. No. 4248 of 2020), following which the Madras High Court was informed that the Government had directed all local bodies not to increase road height during re-laying. It also cited instructions issued by the Chief Secretary and the Commissioner of Municipal Administration in 2021 directing local bodies to maintain the existing road level while carrying out road improvement works.Mr. Kathirmathiyon said repeated overlays without milling had left many houses, originally above road level, below the carriageway, causing rainwater ingress, obstructed access and uncertainty over plinth levels for new buildings.He alleged that despite repeated representations citing the High Court proceedings and government instructions, officials had failed to take corrective action. A legal notice issued in September 2025 to senior officials of the Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department, the Directorate of Municipal Administration and the Coimbatore Corporation proposing contempt proceedings for continued non-compliance had also received no response, he claimed.Mr. Kathirmathiyon urged the Chief Minister to issue fresh directions to all local bodies to strictly enforce the existing government orders, undertake periodic monitoring of road re-laying works, restore roads where the Finished Road Level had been raised in violation of the norms, and recover the cost of rectification from the officials responsible.
