Former Bulgarian Development Bank (BDB) chief executive Stoyan Mavrodiev was released on bail of 50,000 euro after spending only several hours in custody following his extradition from Serbia.

Mavrodiev was transported to Bulgaria yesterday at noon in a convoy and handed over to Bulgarian authorities. Shortly afterward, his defense lawyer Emanuil Yordanov said his client had been detained for up to 72 hours after being charged with misconduct in office.

The Sofia City Prosecutor’s Office later announced that Mavrodiev had been granted bail amounting to 50,000 euro. The decision was made after prosecutors assessed the evidence collected during the pre-trial investigation and the circumstances surrounding the case.

According to the prosecution, the available evidence supports the assumption that Mavrodiev may be involved in the alleged offense. However, authorities concluded that there was no significant risk that he would commit another crime, while the possibility of him attempting to flee was considered to have decreased.

"When determining the measure, the evidence collected during the pre-trial proceedings was taken into account, substantiating the available assumption of involvement in the alleged act, as well as the lack of danger of committing a crime, the reduced intensity of the danger of absconding, the time that has passed since the alleged act, the health condition of the accused, and other relevant circumstances," the prosecutor’s office said.
