Junior Springbok flyhalf Luan Giliomee (centre) was the victim of a horror headbutt by England flanker Seb Kelly (left) that reduced England to 14 men in their Junior World Championship clash in Tbilisi on Monday night.
England Under-20 loose forward Seb Kelly found himself at the centre of a growing storm on Tuesday after his first-half headbutt on Junior Springbok fullback Luan Giliomee overshadowed South Africa's thrilling 53-37 victory in the World Rugby U20 Championship semi-final in Tbilisi, Georgia.
Kelly was shown a straight red card following a Television Match Official (TMO) intervention for driving his head into Giliomee during an off-the-ball altercation, leaving England to play more than half of the high-octane contest with 14 men.
The incident quickly dominated post-match discussions, with former players, supporters, and sections of the international media condemning the act as "disgraceful", "sickening", and "moronic". The flashpoint is also expected to come under heavy scrutiny from World Rugby's disciplinary panel.
The dismissal proved to be the pivotal turning point in the match. England still managed to fight their way to a 20-12 lead at half-time despite their numerical disadvantage, but the Junior Boks eventually wore them down with a blistering second-half display to book a second successive appearance in the world championship showpiece.
