Police and judicial authorities reopened the arson case at the Marfin bank branch and obtained arrest warrants for three suspects after a lengthy forensic analysis prepared by the Hellenic Police Directorate of Criminal Investigations, based on findings from the Homicide Division, according to information presented in the case. The May 5, 2010 arson of a branch of the Marfin-Egnatia bank in Athens claimed the lives of three who were were trapped inside the building.
The Homicide Division became involved about a year and a half ago, seeking previously unprocessed photographs from the day of the events. A senior officer traveled to Cyprus and the United Kingdom to meet photographers, though those efforts did not produce results.
Investigators then exchanged correspondence with State Security and the Counterterrorism Service, requesting older case files involving people from anarchist and anti-authoritarian circles. Among the files reexamined was a 2020 counterterrorism investigation into a storage site containing explosives in Koukaki.
Police had seized photographs from summer 2009 vacations, likely in Ikaria. One image drew particular attention: a tall man carrying a black backpack bearing, in red, the symbol of the punk band Dead Kennedys. Investigators said a backpack with the same emblem appeared to be worn by one of the attackers photographed before the May 5, 2010 assault.
