KZN Legislature speaker Nontembeko Boyce has come under attack from the NFP for allegedly delaying the swearing-in of a new party member
A bitter standoff has emerged between the National Freedom Party (NFP) and KwaZulu-Natal Legislature Speaker Nontembeko Boyce, with the party accusing her of interfering in its internal affairs and frustrating decisions it says were lawfully taken through its constitutional processes.
In a statement issued on Sunday by Secretary-General Sunset Xaba, the NFP alleged that Boyce's handling of the matter sets a troubling precedent for how political parties deploy and recall their public representatives.
According to the party, the Speaker's actions create the impression that she can substitute her own judgment for decisions properly taken by a political party, without regard for its constitution, internal procedures or principles of procedural fairness.
“Such an approach undermines the established relationship between political parties and their deployed public representatives and risks conferring upon the Office of the Speaker powers that extend beyond its constitutional and procedural mandate,” the statement read.
