This includes passengers and crew members.‌Some of the details on how some of the victims died were revealed during Captain Francesco Schettino's trial. According to a report in The Guardian at the time, one French passenger called Francis Servel gave his wife his life vest as she could not swim.He was then unable to find a place on a lifeboat himself. It is believed he either fell or threw himself into the sea, but was sucked underwater by a whirlpool and died by asphyxiation.Other details revealed in court include a middle-aged Italian passenger, Maria Grazia Trecarichi. They too did not find a place on a lifeboat although they were wearing a life vest.‌Waiting to be rescued, they slid off the ship due to how much it tilted and were presumed to have drowned. A waiter also drowned after they remained on the ship to assist with lowering the remaining lifeboats and fell into the water. The report also notes how some people drowned while still aboard the ship, as water rose up violently inside. This was said to have happened as some passengers made their way to the other side of the ship, where other lifeboats remained, and were forced to walk through tilting corridors.Article continues belowThe final body was not found until more than two years after the incident, in November 2014.Schettino was convicted of manslaughter and abandoning ship, and was sentenced in February 2015 to 16 years behind bars.
