Yet it would become infamous for being at the centre of the largest cruise disaster since the Titanic in 2012 after colliding with a rock off the Italian coastline, reports Wales Online.What isn't revealed, however, is whether any of the passengers and crew secured compensation following the incident. Here's what you need to know.How much compensation did Costa Concordia survivors receive?None of the contributors featured in the Netflix documentary disclose whether they received any compensation after the disaster. However, according to reports from 2015, a solicitor representing Costa Cruises informed a court that the firm paid out 84 million euros to 3,586 individuals in total.This encompassed passengers, crew members and relatives of 29 of the 32 victims. Some passengers sought to launch a class action lawsuit against Carnival, the company that owned Costa Cruises, pursuing millions of dollars in damages, but this was ultimately dismissed.According to website Cruise Mummy, the amounts paid out to passengers and crew differed as each case was settled separately. On average, passengers received around 11,000 euros in compensation (approximately £9,387).On top of this, they were handed full refunds covering the cost of their holiday package, travel and transfers, as well as expenses for their journey home. The company also made efforts to return any personal belongings recovered during the salvage of the vessel.For crew members, compensation was negotiated through a trade union. They received any outstanding wages covering two months or the remainder of their employment contract, whichever was the greater amount.Article continues belowIn addition to their wages, crew members could claim up to £2,250 for personal property lost aboard the ship, along with any expenses incurred as a direct result of the disaster. It is believed that around one million euros was awarded to the families of each passenger and crew member who lost their life.The most recent case to pass through the Italian courts was resolved not long ago. One survivor was awarded 92,700 euros (around £79,000) in 2021, after experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder following the harrowing ordeal.Shipwrecked: Nightmare At Sea is streaming on Netflix.
