Kurnool Municipal Corporation (KMC) Commissioner Challa Obulesu has appealed to traders and the public to completely stop using single-use plastic, which is harmful to the environment and public health.Mr. Obulesu on Monday (July 13) visited shops in the Old Bus Stand area and raised awareness among traders about the adverse effects of plastic usage. Speaking on the occasion, the Commissioner urged traders and the public to voluntarily and completely stop the sale and use of plastic in the city. He stated that the Municipal Corporation is conducting continuous special inspections to curb the use of banned plastic.The Commissioner revealed that 201 raids have been conducted so far this year, resulting in the seizure of over 250 kilograms of banned plastic. He noted that fines totaling ₹1,95,150 have been imposed on those violating the regulations.Stating that environmental protection is a collective social responsibility, he suggested using eco-friendly alternatives such as cloth or paper bags instead of plastic. The Commissioner also instructed every business establishment to make available a dustbin in front of their shop and ensure that waste is disposed of in the bin rather than being thrown onto the streets.Every merchant should contribute to the city’s cleanliness, he said and warned that legal action would be taken against those who violate the regulations.The Commissioner inspected sanitation operations in areas such as Sunkesula Road and N.R. Peta and issued instructions to the officials. Subsequently, he visited the 'Anna Canteen’ at the government hospital and reviewed the services being provided there.
