A suspended doctor who is not allowed to practice has been arrested and will appear in the Maleboho Court, Limpopo, tomorrow for a conducting unsafe circumcisions under false pretences. He is facing charges of fraud and contravening the Health Professions Act.

A 66-year-old man accused of conducting unsafe medical circumcisions while allegedly posing as a qualified doctor is expected to apply for bail when he appears in the Maleboho Periodical Court tomorrow.

Mashilo Kgathi appeared briefly in the Senwabarwana Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, July 8, where he was charged with fraud and contravening the Health Professions Act. He was remanded in police custody pending his bail application as police continue their investigation.

According to police, Kgathi was arrested on Monday, July 6, at Slaaphoek village under the Maleboho policing area following allegations that he had been performing unsafe circumcisions under false pretences.

The arrest followed a community tip-off received on July 1 after a concerned resident reported disturbing images of young men suffering from septic wounds after undergoing circumcision procedures in an unsafe environment.
