The Perambalur district administration has stepped up efforts to control the number of stray dogs and prevent the spread of rabies by implementing an Animal Birth Control programme across the district.Collector Sharanya Ari said an animal birth control centre has been functioning at the Keelapuliyur Veterinary Dispensary under the Veppur Panchayat since February. In addition, the programme is being carried out at the Perambalur Veterinary Hospital.Stray dogs are sterilised every week and anti-rabies vaccine administered. So far, 132 stray dogs have undergone sterilisation surgeries.Besides sterilisation, anti-rabies vaccination camps have been conducted in several villages. A total of 301 street dogs have been vaccinated against rabies in V. Kalathur, Poolambadi, Vayalapadi, Keezhamathur, and Adaikkampatti villages.The Collector has appealed to pet owners to ensure that their dogs are vaccinated against rabies to help prevent the spread of the disease, a press note said.
