Tiruchi Corporation has planned a special vaccination drive to administer booster doses of anti-rabies vaccine to stray dogs across the city.According to Corporation officials, a stray dog survey conducted in 2025 estimated the city’s street dog numbers at 43,767. Of these, around 32,000 dogs had been sterilised and vaccinated till last month through animal birth control (ABC) programmes carried out at four centres. As mandated under animal birth control regulations, all sterilised dogs are vaccinated against rabies before being released back to their original locations. Since anti-rabies vaccines require booster doses every two years to maintain protection against the disease, the civic body has decided to identify previously sterilised dogs and administer booster shots.About 1,500 dogs are set to be administered with the booster doses every month under the special drive. The number of dogs getting the booster shots would be increased as per the availability and supply of vaccines, an official said. The first phase of the campaign will focus on areas with high public footfall, including bus stands, railway stations, and educational institutions, to enhance public safety.
