Ukrainian authorities have launched an investigation into violent clashes in the western city of Lviv linked to military mobilization efforts, in the latest sign of growing tensions surrounding the country’s recruitment system during the war with Russia.
The confrontation broke out on Wednesday evening after military recruitment officers stopped a man in the city to check his documents. According to the Lviv Regional Territorial Recruitment Center, the 30-year-old had been mobilized but was found to have violated military registration rules. Authorities said he was later sent for a military medical examination.
The situation escalated when a group of people gathered around a military vehicle at the scene. Police said the crowd grew to around 200 people, with some participants blocking the vehicle, acting aggressively and eventually overturning it.
Videos shared online showed people surrounding a black military vehicle in a residential area, chanting “Shame!” before some individuals climbed onto it and damaged its windows. Other footage appeared to show a military recruitment officer being pushed and pressured to remove his uniform, with people attempting to tear it off.
