Australian Internet of Things (IoT) firm X2M Connect Limited is looking to move into the data center space. The ASX-listed firm this week announced its partner, Resi Ventures, has completed settlement for land located approximately 10 kilometres (6.2 miles) from Ballarat's central business district in regional Victoria.Ballarat is a city in the Central Highlands of Victoria, Australia, some 115km (71.4 miles) northwest of Melbourne. The land is set to host an integrated data center and energy infrastructure precinct to be developed by the two firms.Still subject to customary planning and regulatory approvals, the precinct is planned to comprise a data center – potentially ranging in capacity from 10-100MW – as well as a 10MW+ battery energy storage system, heavy electric vehicle charging, an anaerobic biodigester, and hot house horticulture. The data center will reportedly be a high-density facility capable of supporting AI compute workloads.X2M and Resi Ventures first announced plans to collaborate on the development of data centers in June. The company aims to develop integrated data center and energy projects in regional Australia. The partners at the time said their first project would be in the Miners Rest Renewable Energy Integration Precinct, located around 10km northwest of Ballarat. X2M will manage power, cooling, and connectivity. The companies said they are working on a “pipeline of data center expansion opportunities” across Australia and have one additional site already owned and another under negotiation.X2M CEO and managing director, Mohan Jesudason, said: "Settlement of the land for the Ballarat site is an important step in advancing our partnership with Resi Ventures. Our role is clear. We aim to bring the technology equipment and operators together and run the precinct as one management system, from energy and cooling through to metering, connectivity and safety.”Anthony Braunthal, co-founder of Resi Ventures, added: "Resi Ventures has a long history of land development in Australia with about AU$900m (US$624m) in projects under development. Developing regional data centers is an important part of our future growth strategy. In X2M we see the potential to have a partner that will bring significant value to the progression of that strategy."X2M describes itself as an Australian smart city technology company delivering solutions that enhance productivity, reduce operational costs, and improve public safety for utility and government customers. X2M's platforms enable real-time data exchange, remote control, and predictive insights by connecting water, gas, and electricity resource devices as well as other critical sensors to Edge and cloud-based software.
