A hospital in Serres, northern Greece, released the bodies for burial of two men to the wrong families resulting in a lawsuit and an exhumation request for one them.
The General Hospital in Serres said in a press release that two men, one aged 86 from Serres and the other aged 79 from Xanthi, died on the same day (July 6), and their families were called to receive their remains. The first family that arrived on July 7 identified one of the bodies as their relative and received his remains.
When the second family arrived the next day, they were shown the body of an unknown man, state-run broadcaster ERT reported. The daughter of the deceased notified the police and filed a lawsuit against the hospital. She is also expected to request permission from a prosecutor to exhume her father who was buried by the other family in a Muslim cemetery in Xanthi, believing he was their relative.
The hospital said it has contacted the first family whose members initially insisted they had buried the right man on July 8. They are expected to visit the hospital again and identify the remaining body.
The hospital administration has ordered an investigation into the incident.
