Authorities on Friday charged two doctors at a private Athens clinic with the felony offense of endangerment resulting in death, following the death of popular singer Giorgos Mazonakis after he reportedly visited the clinic to undergo plasmapheresis.
The doctors are accused of jointly committing the offense, which under Greek law involves exposing a person to danger resulting in death.
According to information, the charges are based in part on evidence indicating that Mazonakis was undergoing the medical procedure at the clinic when he died and that the clinic’s medical office was not licensed to perform the procedure in question.
Meanwhile, the cause of Mazonakis’ death remained undetermined following a forensic examination Friday. The autopsy produced findings, but they were not sufficient to establish a clear cause of death, according to the forensic pathologist’s initial assessment.
A death certificate was issued to allow the singer’s funeral to proceed, while toxicological and other laboratory tests are expected to shed further light on the circumstances of his death.
