A chara, – A Bank of Ireland sign at the old Irish Parliament building on College Green refers to current works on the building, stating: “Business continues inside as it has done for almost 250 years.” Since the bank bought the building in 1803 and opened it for banking in 1808, the 250 years must also refer to its previous use as the Irish Parliament. The Irish Parliament voted itself out of existence through a combination of bribery and intimidation by the British regime. It continues to be a civic anomaly and a national disgrace that this historic building is not in public ownership but is the branch office of a bank. The building belongs by right to the Irish people for use as a cultural space and civic amenity of national and international importance. The bank and the Government need to act accordingly. – Yours, etc,Cllr MÍCHEÁL Mac DONNCHA,City Hall,Dublin 2.
