Sir,- It is not the first time the ownership of the historic Parliament building on College Green by Bank of Ireland has been aired (“Old Irish Parliament building on College Green belongs to the Irish people by right”, Letters, July 9). I too believe it’s more than time the bank donates this important historic building to the people of Ireland.First built in 1729 to house a semi-independent Irish Parliament, it has been in the ownership of Bank of Ireland since 1808 (shortly after the Act of Union) and would be an impressive location for our National Archives, which are currently hidden away in a modern office building on the little-known Bishop Street – a laneway off Wexford Street. Instead, there would be recognition of the importance of our archive by easy access and standing proudly on a prominent city centre site as in most other western countries. This important building, designed over the years by such architects as Gandon, Pearce, Johnston and Parke, is surely worthy of public ownership. Imagine the outrage if the Four Courts, the Custom House and, dare I say it, even the GPO were operating only as commercial banks. It is more than time for Bank of Ireland Governors to make the generous and historic gesture and place this important piece of our history in the care of the people of Ireland. – Yours, etc,MARION WALSH,Donnybrook,Co Dublin.
