Specifically, a bright red dress from Reformation which I’ve been eyeing since last summer. It’s tight on the torso and kicks out into an A-line skirt; easy, flattering, elegant. The only catch? It has a £198 price tag. I was ready to finally succumb and order it, until I walked into Gap and became distracted by something similar for £40. Well, similar apart from the price. There had to be a catch. It wouldn’t fit as well, wouldn’t flatter.I was visiting the Gap store in London's Covent Garden with the intention of buying some clothes for my children but, before I knew it, I was in the fitting rooms with the aforementioned dress and an armful of other clothes, all of them tapping into the clean, minimalist style of the Nineties - Gap’s heyday - but in a way that feels fresh rather than nostalgic. The more I tried on, the more impressed I was. The proportions are thoughtful, the fabrics feel substantial, and the majority of pieces are made from 100% natural fibres, are lined and have pockets. This is all thanks to creative director and executive vice president, Zac Posen. Before joining Gap in 2024, the acclaimed designer dressed everyone from Rihanna, Cameron Diaz, Reese Witherspoon and Rita Ora to Princess Eugenie, whose evening reception wedding dress he designed in 2018.Posen was a major signing for Gap, and one of his smartest moves was bringing Victoria Beckham on board for a Spring/Summer collaboration - an autumn edit will be landing later this year.Of its summer collection, the chocolate brown linen trousers (£60) teamed with a long white cami (£45) is one of my favourite looks: effortless and chic. The trousers have a comfortable drawstring waist and are cut with plenty of movement, while that longer-length white top keeps everything sleek. And both items seem to be made to last, with hook-and-eye fastening and a concealed zip showing real attention to design. These Victoria Beckham white jeans (£85) are something I would have loved in my late teens but still feel great: relaxed with just the right amount of slouch. Paired with the coloured knitted vest (£30), they reference the decade without trying too hard. They’re youthful but still appropriate for those of us who wore the trend first time around!Another standout is the denim dress (£45): sophisticated and beautifully fitted through the waist with flattering ruching across the bust, a slight drop waist and a full skirt. The excess of fabric means it moves beautifully, and the wide straps mean you can wear a proper bra. It feels remarkably premium - especially considering it was reduced from £90 to £45. The linen shorts set is probably the most wearable outfit in the collection. The shorts (£40) are a flattering length, and the boxy shirt (£70) would work just as well thrown over jeans or a swimsuit. The neutral colourway makes it endlessly versatile. And what about that dress? It was perfect. The ruching created shape without feeling too revealing, the colour was every bit as striking, and it had pockets. I wore it to an event a few days later and I’ve never received so many compliments.Gap is back. Zac Posen is cleverly reminding us exactly why we fell in love with the brand in the first place.
