Yes, I could happily fill my basket with pretty linen dresses, colourful tops and all the other lovely things that make getting dressed in August feel effortless. But, tempting as they are, I’m choosing to look a little further ahead.Instead, I’m using Reformation’s sale as an opportunity to top up my transitional wardrobe – because, before we know it, those warm summer evenings will turn into crisp mornings, and the question of what to wear to work (or, frankly, anywhere) will become a little more complicated again. My approach? Invest in the pieces I know I’ll wear on repeat. Think great-fitting denim, luxurious knitwear, timeless outerwear, polished boots and bags that will instantly make an outfit feel more pulled together. These are the wardrobe heroes that bridge the gap between seasons, rather than the pieces that have a very specific summer shelf life. And there are some seriously good discounts to be found right now. Reformation’s jeans, for example, are reduced from £178 to £124.60, with everything from wide-leg and straight-leg styles to a more directional denim trouser. I’ve also got my eye on the cashmere and wool knitwear, which is exactly the kind of thing I’ll be grateful to have come September – particularly when it’s 12 degrees outside, and I’ve dramatically underestimated how cold it’s going to be.Then there’s the outerwear. A classic trench or denim jacket is one of those purchases that can completely transform a transitional wardrobe, and the sale has some particularly good options. I’m also making a mental note of the boots: ankle boots, knee-highs and sleek mules that can be worn now with lighter pieces, then carried straight through autumn and beyond. Finally, there are the bags. Rather than another novelty summer tote, I’m looking for styles that will work with jeans and knitwear just as easily as they do with a dress.Essentially, I’m shopping for the wardrobe I actually want to wear in a few months’ time. Because while a £50 linen dress might be tempting at the height of summer, a really good pair of jeans, trench coat or cashmere jumper at a discount is the kind of sale purchase you’ll thank yourself for making all year round.DenimKnitwearOuterwearShoesBags
