Two new Social Justice hostels (Samooga Needhi Viduthigal) in Coimbatore are yet to be opened for use despite officials stating earlier that the facilities would be brought into use from the 2026-27 academic year.The boys’ Social Justice hostel on Dr. Balasundaram Road was taken up for construction in 2023 under schemes implemented by the Tamil Nadu Adi Dravidar Housing and Development Corporation (TAHDCO) and the Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare Department. Constructed at ₹14.87 crore, the three-storey building can accommodate 250 students.The hostel comprises a warden’s room, a kitchen, a dining hall, a multi-purpose hall, an indoor sports complex, a gym, a storage room and a staff room on the ground floor, besides 16 rooms each on the first and second floors. Though the facility was inaugurated in last October, it remains unoccupied.The Social Justice hostel for college women at Sungam, built at ₹10.13 lakh, and inaugurated last December also remains vacant.Coimbatore district has 26 Social Justice hostels. The two new hostels are expected to augment the existing hostel infrastructure once they become operational.An official of the Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare Department said the boys’ hostel on Dr. Balasundaram Road had not been opened as a dedicated electricity transformer was yet to be installed. The hostel would be opened after the transformer was installed and power supply provided, the official said.Regarding the girls’ hostel at Sungam, the official said a few minor structural works remained to be completed before it could be put into use.
