Minister for Backward Classes Welfare V. Sampath Kumar on Friday (July 3) said the State government would address deficiencies in Social Justice hostels across the State based on a district-wise inspection being carried out on the instructions of Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay.Inspecting a Social Justice hostel here, the Minister said the review focused on the quality of food, study atmosphere and other facilities. Action would be taken based on the feedback received from students during the inspection, he added.The students had informed the authorities that basic facilities were available, Mr. Sampath Kumar added. Though they had not specifically sought minor amenities such as mosquito nets, the government had a responsibility to provide them, he added.He said instructions had been issued to inspect the functioning of CCTV cameras in all the hostels across the state and ensure that defective cameras were repaired without delay.The Minister said the Chief Minister would announce an action plan to fill vacancies in the hostels. The government would also take measures to improve the students’ employment prospects, he added.Referring to the schoolchildren’s hostel at Vellode, Mr. Sampath Kumar said it had been closed owing to low occupancy. He welcomed bringing the issue to the government’s attention and said steps would be taken to resolve it.Mr. Sampath Kumar said college students staying in the hostels were being credited ₹150 every month directly into their bank accounts to meet basic necessities.
