Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan sparked controversy after making a mysterious crossed-arms gesture toward the referee during his side's dramatic FIFA World Cup Round of 16 defeat to Argentina.

At Atlanta Stadium, Egypt squandered a two-goal lead as a Lionel Messi-inspired Argentina rallied to claim a thrilling 3-2 victory and keep their World Cup title defence alive.

Tempers flared throughout the closing stages, with several Egyptian players and members of the technical bench booked by French referee François Letexier.

The tension escalated in the 94th minute when a member of Egypt's coaching staff was sent off.
