While many would have noticed Egypt coach Hossam Hassan holding his arms above his head in an X shape during the latter stages of his side’s Fifa World Cup 2026 Round of 16 clash against Argentina, few would have realised he was signalling an allegation of racism.
FIFA introduced the anti-racism gesture in 2024 to allow coaches or players to report racist incidents during matches. If deemed legitimate, the signal can ultimately lead to a match being suspended or even abandoned.
The gesture came after referee François Letexier overturned an Egypt goal following an on-field VAR review. Officials ruled that an incident around 20 seconds before the goal meant it could not stand.
The controversial decision ignited tensions on the Egypt bench and undoubtedly contributed to Hassan’s actions later in the game.
