Heavy machinery and bulk bags stand ready to process large quantities of collected electronics at the Langa e-waste imbizo in Cape Town. This large-scale recovery effort highlights the ongoing commitment of the ERA NPC and the DFFE to diverting hazardous waste from local landfills.

A joint initiative between the South African government and an electronic waste management authority has brought in more than 5.3 tonnes of hazardous material from landfills during a community collection event in Langa.

The E-Waste Imbizo, held on Friday, June 12, was organised by the Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment (DFFE) in partnership with the Electronic Waste Recycling Authority (ERA NPC).

Led by Deputy Minister Bernice Swarts, the pilot project rollout aimed to increase local participation in the circular economy by providing financial incentives for recycling.

Community members gather at the bustling Langa drop-off zone during the e-waste imbizo. Organised as a joint initiative by the ERA NPC and the DFFE, the event provided residents with an accessible way to dispose of their old appliances and electronics safely.
