Chelsea just locked down one of its brightest young talents with a contract extension, and immediately shipped him off to Portugal.
Jesse Derry, the 19-year-old English forward, will join Sporting CP on loan until June 2027. Chelsea is footing the entire salary bill, and there’s no purchase option baked into the deal. The message is clear: Derry belongs to Chelsea, and Sporting is essentially getting a free trial of a prospect that Bayern Munich and Juventus were circling.
The deal structure and what it signals
No option to buy is the key detail here. Derry signed a new long-term contract extension with Chelsea around early July 2026, just days before this loan was finalized. The extension was reportedly motivated in part by interest from Bayern Munich and Juventus.
Born on June 30, 2007, Derry only joined Chelsea from Crystal Palace in July 2025 on a four-year deal, having rejected a professional deal at Palace. He made his senior debut for the club in the FA Cup against Hull City in February 2026, which means he went from academy acquisition to first-team minutes in roughly seven months.
