The coalition said the controversy has exposed serious weaknesses in Nigeria's governance architecture and raised critical questions that require independent investigation rather than competing political narratives.
The Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room has demanded an independent, transparent and comprehensive investigation into the scandal surrounding the alleged fake Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council (PFIPC), questioning how a purportedly non-existent federal agency allegedly secured a ₦1.3billion allocation in the 2026 national budget.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the coalition of more than 70 civil society organisations said the controversy surrounding the alleged fake agency raises serious concerns about transparency, accountability and due diligence within Nigeria's public appointment and budgeting processes.
The coalition expressed concern over reports alleging the appointment of Prince Adeyemi Adeniyi Matthew as Director-General of the purported agency, which has also been described in some reports as the Presidential Economic Advisory Council.
"The issues raised by this matter extend well beyond the guilt or innocence of any single individual," the coalition said in the statement jointly signed by the Convener of the Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room, Yunusa Z. Ya'u, and Co-Conveners Mma Odi and Celestine Odo.
