DIY SOS star Nick Knowles conceded appearing on one TV show "didn't work out well for me" after he announced he planned to "disappear" from television for personal reasons15:06, 07 Jul 2026TV star Nick Knowles admitted appearing on one particular TV show "didn't work out well for me" after revealing his plans to "disappear" from television. The 63-year-old is one of British TV's most bankable presenters, with DIY SOS running on the BBC for an impressive 27 years and counting.Nick recently broke the news that he is planning to take some time off work to care for his wife, Katie Dadzie, who requires urgent surgery.Alongside his role on DIY SOS and game show Who Dares Wins, Nick has also appeared on British TV's two biggest reality shows, I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! and Strictly Come Dancing. But he admitted one of those experiences could have gone better.Nick signed up to compete on BBC megashow Strictly in 2024. He was a popular contestant with fans, but things turned sour as he suffered a series of injuries. The presenter was paired with professional dancer, Luba Mushtuk, but injured his arm and shoulder while changing a flat tyre before the second week.Shortly afterwards, he tore his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) while preparing for Strictly's week three. He was given a bye that week but somehow returned for week four, though he was voted out, clearly struggling with his injuries.Speaking to Heat, Nick was asked if there is anything he would like to do reality-TV wise.He replied: "No. Strictly didn't work out particularly well for me because I damaged my knee. And it's taken me two years to come back from that."Nick would go on to miss the grand final of the show, famously won by blind comedian Chris McCausland and Dianne Buswell. He was recovering from two intensive, back-to-back surgeries to reattach his bicep and completely reconstruct his ACL.It comes after Nick revealed he has been compelled to take time off work after his wife, Katie, needed urgent surgery. The 36 year old lingerie businesswoman was taken to hospital in an emergency when her cervix ruptured following a hysterectomy, just weeks after she and Nick married at Braxted Park Estate, Essex, in June 2025.Katie has now been informed she requires another significant operation, prompting Nick to decide he must remain at home to look after her.Nick told the Daily Mail's Richard Eden that he needed to "disappear" for a while: "I've been looking after my wife a lot because she has been through it. She's had a lot of tough times. She's got another operation coming up."I will disappear for a while because I'll be looking after her. I'm always worried (about her) but she's a warrior and a fighter, so I know she'll be fine."Katie had a hysterectomy last summer following "years of pain" from struggling with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), endometriosis and adenomyosis. However, 12 weeks into her recovery, the stitches in Katie's cervix ruptured, leaving her with "crippling abdominal pains."Article continues belowNick admits that his break from DIY SOS has given him the chance "to have more space for my wife".He told Heat: "We've only been married a year, so spending more time together has been great."
